Getting Started with Collage

design by Erin Terrell

I have a confession to make, and I want to be up-front about it. I don’t know how to collage. There, I said it, and I feel much better! Frequently I see beautiful collaged layouts, but I have a hard time duplicating the look myself. I sometimes feel my style is much too rigid and structured to carry off that random “let-it-fall-where-it-may” look. Since collage style was introduced to the scrapbooking market, thousands have flocked to stores in search of walnut ink, watch faces, postage stamps, and bottle caps, only to sit down to design and have no idea how to use them!

The more I’ve studied the art of collage, the more I’ve learned how to approach it. Although collage has no hard and fast rules, there are a few guidelines you can follow to make the process less frustrating. We also can dispel some of the myths surrounding collage, allowing you to design beautiful collage pages that reflect your unique style!
