April Photo Challenge: Close-Up

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Upload your photos to Facebook (/scrapbooksetcmagazine) or Twitter (@scrapbooksetc) and tag us in your photo/post so we can see! Visit our blog every day for inspiration, great photo tips, and to see pics from our staff.

Today’s photo challenge is close-ups. Getting up close and personal can add drama, interest, and detail to any photo subject. Macro shots allow you to capture all the special little things in your life that sometimes get lost in the big picture. The macro setting on your camera (look for a flower icon on most models) helps you get picture-perfect results every time. Get our best macro photography tips here.

See my close-up pic below. I took a normal shot of a bouquet of flowers sitting on the desk. The bouquet is beautiful, but you don’t get all the gorgeous details and colors from the first shot like you do with the close-up.

April Photo Challenge: Decor You Crafted

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Upload your photos to Facebook (/scrapbooksetcmagazine) or Twitter (@scrapbooksetc) and tag us in your photo/post so we can see! Visit our blog every day for inspiration, great photo tips, and to see pics from our staff.

Today’s photo challenge is decor you crafted. Here at Scrapbooks Etc., we use paper to craft more than just scrapbook pages. We make cards, holiday trinkets, gifts, and decor for our homes and offices. We encourage others to expand their crafting to other areas of their life than just recording memories.

See my crafted decor below. I made it to hang on one of the walls in my cubicle. I have an obsession with typewriters. I enlarged the typewriter paper piecing pattern (get it here) and revised our subway art download with different words (get it here) to look like it was coming out of the typewriter. Then, I punched stars from different color paper and sewed them together in a long chain.

April Photo Challenge: Rule of Thirds

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Upload your photos to Facebook (/scrapbooksetcmagazine) or Twitter (@scrapbooksetc) and tag us in your photo/post so we can see! Visit our blog every day for inspiration, great photo tips, and to see pics from our staff.

Today’s photo challenge is rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is one of the most basic photography tricks to learn to make your pictures balanced and interesting. The basic idea of the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts. If you place the most important parts of your picture in the intersections, your photos will have a greater impact and follow the most natural line of sight.

See my rule of thirds picture below. I made sure to position the dog’s face (the most important part of the photo), at an intersection point of two lines.

April Photo Challenge: Chaos

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Today’s photo challenge is chaos. You can find chaos in every day life. Whether it’s your messy craft room, your children’s play date, or a nature scene, life is always full of action. Don’t be afraid to capture these moments of imperfection.

See my chaos picture below. Last night, there was a horrible storm. The wind was blowing, the rain and hail were coming down hard, and the lightning was streaking across the sky. I shot this photo out my picture window. It was raining so hard, you couldn’t see past the glass and the light from my apartment reflected the drops of water on the window.

April Photo Challenge: In Your Bag

Today’s photo challenge is in your bag. What you have in your purse says a lot about you. It shows your organization style and what things you find important enough to carry around all day.

See inside my purse below. I just bought this purse yesterday, so it still looks pretty organized and neat.

April Photo Challenge: Handwriting

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Upload your photos to Facebook (/scrapbooksetcmagazine) or Twitter (@scrapbooksetc) and tag us in your photo/post so we can see! Visit our blog every day for inspiration, great photo tips, and to see pics from our staff.

Today’s photo challenge is handwriting. How many of us do our scrapbook journaling with a computer because we hate our handwriting? Journaling is a big part of recording your memories, but it’s hard to love the look of your page if you’re not a fan of what your writing looks like. But your handwriting tells a bigger story than just what you’re journaling! It’s a part of who you are and it’s unique. (We bet future generations will love to have your handwriting on your scrapbook pages!) See our creative journaling ideas here.

See my handwriting below. I snapped this pic of the millions of notes I have on my work desk.

April Photo Challenge: Current Project

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Upload your photos to Facebook (/scrapbooksetcmagazine) or Twitter (@scrapbooksetc) and tag us in your photo/post so we can see! Today’s photo challenge is a current project. You’re probably more creative than you think you are. Whether your current project is a scrapbook page, invitations to a party, a knitted scarf, or even rearranging a room, you are creative every day. Taking photos of your projects can help you remember what you worked on, the ideas you really liked from your work, and to show off to friends and family!

See my current project below. I’ve been working on my Project Life since January. I usually set aside three days a month to catch up with all my pages and edit pictures. Want to get involved in Project Life? It’s never too late to start! See our inspiration here!

April Photo Challenge: Action

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Upload your photos to Facebook (/scrapbooksetcmagazine) or Twitter (@scrapbooksetc) and tag us in your photo/post so we can see! Visit our blog every day for inspiration, great photo tips, and to see pics from our staff.

Today’s photo challenge is action. Do the photos in your scrapbook pages need a little energy? Snag a subject on the move to get away from always taking posed and perfect pictures. Action shots capture life and candid moments. Get our best action photography tips here.

Instead of sharing my own picture, I’m sharing one of my favorite layouts that demonstrates a great action shot! The designer, Kim, used a not-so-perfect action photos of a zooming taxi to make perfect travel page. The blurry photo of a New York City cab creates a sense of motion in her design. See the sources here.

April Photo Challenge: Family/Friends

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Upload your photos to Facebook (/scrapbooksetcmagazine) or Twitter (@scrapbooksetc) and tag us in your photo/post so we can see! Visit our blog every day for inspiration, great photo tips, and to see pics from our staff.

Today’s photo challenge is family/friends. Many times, family and friends are why we start scrapbooking–and why we keep scrapbooking. Taking photos of your loved ones (whether it’s a special occasion or just a normal Tuesday), is what inspires many of our pages.

See the picture I took below for my family/friends challenge. I have millions of pictures of my best friend and I, so I wanted to represent our friendship in a different way. We went out for dinner at our favorite restaurant and both ordered the exact same meal and exact same drinks. I took a picture of our food to show how alike we are.

April Photo Challenge: Inspiration

This April, we’re challenging all our readers to see their lives and the world around them with a creative eye. Follow our photo prompts every day. Upload your photos to Facebook (/scrapbooksetcmagazine) or Twitter (@scrapbooksetc) and tag us in your photo/post so we can see! Today’s photo challenge is inspiration. Scrapbooking ideas can come from anywhere — the morning paper, your garden, Pinterest (see our boards here), or fabric. Creativity can be inspired by fantastic pictures, someone else’s scrapbook page, or life in general. Look for inspiration in everyday life and you’ll never run out of fresh ideas.

See the picture I took below for my inspiration challenge. The picture is of a calendar and small art collage made entirely of Kaari Meng’s “French General” line for EK Success. I was so inspired by her beautiful products that I couldn’t help but craft.
